Fast Car + Bad Clutch = 2 DNFs

It was a weekend of highs and lows for the David Elliott Racing Team.

On Saturday night, the team rolled the car off the trailer at Flamboro Speedway and David had a feeling he would be a contender for his first feature win of the year.

The #37 was fast in warm ups and worked well in traffic…netting David a 2nd and a 3rd in the two heat races. After just minor adjustments to adapt to the cooling track, the team rolled the car out in the 8th position for the evenings feature race.

The evening started out with a bang when the #95 turned the #75 around at the front of the pack on lap 2. David cut the car low and managed to avoid the carnage which collected many of the top cars…including the #52 of Scott Lyons, #8 of Paul Howse and #36 of Gary Elliott.

The #37 lined up in second, right behind the #86 of Kenny Forth for the restart. As the green waved, David made a power move to the outside of Forth and drove hard into turn one. The car stuck and David moved into the lead on the back stretch. With the car handling well and the motor running strong, David was poised to capture his first feature of the year. Then, on lap 12, the car suddenly slowed on the front straight, causing a couple cars to get together behind him.

David came over the radio saying the car’s transmission was slipping. He tried to takeoff when the green flew again, but the car wouldn’t go. The dejected driver brought the car into the pits for the evening. Even with the DNF, the #37 still scored an 8th place finish. The crew diagnosed a clutch failure as the culprit and made quick repairs so the car could run again on Sunday at Delaware.

Just after noon on Sunday, David brought the #37 Monte Carlo onto Delaware Speedway for hot laps prior to the APC 300. Although no official times were collected, several teams had David as the fastest car on the track.

In qualifying, David knew that his American Racing Tires needed a couple laps to heat up and he likely wouldn’t be at the top of the speed charts. When all 42 cars had turned in times, the #37 was 3rd quickest of the non-Delaware cars…giving him a 2nd place start in the second 75 lap qualifying race after the 4-car invert.

Although he slipped to 4th early on, David was ecstatic with the cars power and handling and stayed right with the two faster cars, #7 of Pete Vanderwyst and #3 of D.J. Kennington. Around lap 30, David moved up to make a pass for 3rd on the #30 of Terry Jones. Jones turned down into David on the backstretch and after hard contact between the two cars David completed the pass.

During a caution flag shortly after the pass, David complained that he had damage to the rear of his car. Inspection from the spotter and crew indicated that the right rear rim may be bent, but on the restart David realized that the right rear tire was also going down. He brought the #37 to the pits to change 2 right side tires, but decided to park the car and save the tires for the feature race. Unfortunately for the David Elliott Racing Team, the tires didn’t need to be spared. On just lap 7 of the feature race, the clutch which had to be hastily repaired on Saturday night, failed again and David had to retire for the day.

“This was possibly the most frustrating weekend of my racing career,” said David. “The car was awesome, but the clutch problems did us in.”

The team has a couple weeks to install a new clutch before the car returns to action at Flamoro Speedway on Saturday, September 15th.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6:30…see you there.

Another top 5 For David Elliott Racing

Saturday August 18th was a great day for David Elliott Racing , we had a great set of

tires left over from the week before. We went out in the first and started 4th, by lap 2 we

were in 3rd place following #8 of Paul Howse and #10x a Delaware car of Jesse Kenndey.

The twocars made contact coming of turn 2 and both cars spun into the middle of the s

traight. David was the only car to make it through the wreck out of all the cars on the track.

We took over the lead and never looked back, we won our heat race for the 4th consecutive

week. David stated 9th in the feature and on the first lap there was a caution when Paul

Howse was spun coming off of turn 2, this was the only caution of the night. When we took

the green we moved to the outside lane and this lane didn't move forward. we ended up

loosing a few spots and then started to work forward. by the end of the race we were within

6 car lengthsof the leader Jeff Stewart, Jason Shaw finished 2nd and Scott Lyons Finished

3rd.

We had a good points night, but so did The 1st and 2nd place cars in the standings. with 2-3

nights of points racing left, were going to need some luck on our side to move forward in the

standings. We have a 25 point lead over 4th place Gary Elliott and were only 12 points out of

2nd place Scott Lyons.
