Elliott Wheels Wounded Car to Top-5 Finish

First impressions were that June 9th was going to be a good night for the David Elliott Racing Team, with David turning fast laps in both practice sessions. However, first impressions can be wrong.

The #37 started the heat race in fifth place, but David almost immediately noticed that the car felt very loose in the middle of the turns. Shortly after a mid-race restart, a bearing seized in the right front wheel, causing David to spin and slam the turn one wall driver’s side first.

David was uninjured, but the same could not be said for the car. Control arms, tie rods and trailing arms were just a few of the parts destroyed on the car. Although things looked bleak, nobody on the David Elliott Racing Team was willing to give up and call it a night. With loaned parts from fellow-competitors the team set to work repairing the car.

Even fellow drivers Scott Lyons, Richard Holmes and Ron Larkin were working alongside the #37 team. Although the car wasn’t repaired in time to start the consolation race, David was able to take advantage of a promoter’s option spot and the beaten and battered #37 started the 50-lap feature in the 26th and last spot on the grid.

The bad luck early in the night, may have been a blessing in disguise. On the second lap, the #56 spun the leader in front of the field. Most of the top-15 cars were involved in the ensuing mayhem to one extent or another. David was able to stop his car and avoided any new damage.

The second-lap carnage was a sign of things to come as the race saw six more cautions by lap 40. David was able to avoid trouble and slowly wove his way up to the 5th position. On the final restart David came over the radio saying there was a problem and the motor was missing on the straightaway.

Fortune finally smiled on the #37 as the eighth and final caution flew on lap 44, causing the race to be called six laps short of the scheduled 50 lap distance.

“That was the most incredible show of teamwork and sportsmanship I’ve ever seen. The crew really worked hard to get this car back on the track and I’ve really got to thank all my competitors who helped out too” said Elliott. “Even with all that work I didn’t think we could finish much better than 15th. To come home with a top-5 is awesome.”

The team has a lot of work to do to get the #37 Monte Carlo ready for this coming weekend’s race. But if last Saturday is any indication, look for David to be in contention for the win when the checkered flag falls.

We will be appearing at Rose-Hill liquidation this weekend June 16th from 10am until  2 pm,  hope to see everyone there.
