Elliott Walks Away with 3rd Feature Win of 2008
After leaving Flamboro Speedway for two consecutive races with a torn-up race car, the David Elliott Racing Team was looking to turn their luck around.
An unsettled weather forecast caused the team to opt out of racing at Delaware Speedway on Friday night. The weather held for the Part Source 141 and David was initially disappointed the team didn’t attend the race.
That disappointment turned to relief when the #37 Pennzoil Chevrolet sputtered during the first practice session at Flamboro on Saturday night. The team found a hole in the pick-up hose in the car’s fuel cell and quickly made the repair.
“Now I’m glad we didn’t go to Delaware ,” said David. “We wouldn’t have found this problem until the race already started and we would have dropped out within the first 10 laps of the race.”
With the fuel pick-pickup problem resolved, the car was fast in the final practice session and David was excited about his chances for a win.
David started the #37 in the fifth spot for his heat race. With six cars from the heat moving on to the feature race, David decided to take it easy and make sure he finished in a qualifying spot – which he did, by finishing 5th.
The Pennzoil Chevrolet was scheduled to start in the third position for the evening’s feature, however, when pole-sitter, Ted Horsfall had mechanical issues and couldn’t start the race, David was able to take the green from the outside of the front row.
When the green flag flew, new pole-sitter, T.J. Marshall and David raced side-by-side into turn one. Coming off turn two, David had the slight edge and Marshall tucked in behind the #37.
Following an early caution, on lap two, the Pennzoil Chevrolet began pulling away from the field. Marshall, Kenny Forth and Mark Burbridge all took turns running second, but the #37 continued to pull away from them all. When the checkered flag flew, David was a full straightaway ahead of the second place car.
“I was waiting for something to happen all race long, but I’m glad our luck turned around,” said an elated Elliott after the race. “T.J. is a good, clean racer, so I knew we could race hard into turn one and not worry about him pushing into our lane.”
David and the team will be taking next weekend off. The #37 Pennzoil Late Model will be on display at Skyway Jack’s in Mississauga from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12th before racing in the second leg of the Grisdale Triple Crown at Flamboro Speedway that evening.
