Elliott Overcomes Scoring Fiasco to
Record Top-5
After two weeks with
an ill handling car, David Elliott felt
he had a car to beat at Flamboro
Speedway on June 23rd. The
#37 Monte Carlo was turning times in the
15.5s in its heat race, so David told
the crew not to touch the car before the
evening’s 35-lap feature race.
David was lined up 11th when
the green flag flew for start of the
feature. The two front-row cars got
together coming out of turn two causing
a huge pile-up…with only four cars
making it through before the track was
blocked. David was able to stop his car
before he hit the #8 of Paul Howse which
was backwards on the track.
When the track was cleared and the cars
began rolling again officials informed
David and the #52 of Scott Lyons that
they had been involved in the accident
and needed to start at the rear of the
field.
Both drivers were furious and pointed
out to the on-track officials that many
other cars which had spun or inflicted
damage in the wreck were restarting at
the front of the pack. Although both the
#37 and #52 had safely stopped and
avoided the wreck, officials refused to
listen to logic and sent the two cars to
the tail of the field.
The fans were in for
a great show when the green flag flew
again, as the two irate former champions
carved their way through the pack. The
#52 of Lyons stayed glued to the rear
bumper of David’s car, following him
into the top-10 by mid-race. Elliott
continued his forward progress and
finished the race in 5th,
followed closely by Lyons.
Both drivers filed protests after the
race, even showing the official scorer
and flagman the rulebook which proved
that every car that spun or stopped
should have been deemed “involved in the
wreck”. While the officials were unable
to come up with a logical explanation on
why they didn’t make the decision as the
rulebook indicated they should, they
also wouldn’t change their stance.
“I should be happy with a top-5 finish,
but the poor calls made by the officials
tonight were infuriating,” said David.
“At least the fans got a good show
watching Scott and I come back up to the
front.”
Indeed, the fans did see an amazing
display of driving from the #37 and #52,
but drivers and crews alike we left
shaking their heads at the unexplainable
scoring decisions made by officials.
David will be signing
plenty of autographs this weekend. The
#37 Monte Carlo will be at Thank Cod
Fish and Chips on Brant St. in
Burlington from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this
Saturday. The team will then head back
to Flamboro Speedway for more exciting
racing and an autograph session where
fans can come out onto the track to meet
their favourite drivers.
Gates open at 5 p.m.
and racing starts at 6:30.
See you there!
