Top-10 Doesn’t Come Easy for Elliott at Delaware

With no Late Model racing scheduled for Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday, the David Elliott Racing Team decided to head down the 401 Friday night and visited Delaware Speedway.

Work obligations meant that David would not make it to the track until just before the first heat race. Since he hadn’t been on the track for any practice and this was his first time at the track this season, David started at the back of the eight-car field for his heat race.

Wanting to use the heat race as a test session, the driver of the #37 dropped well back prior to the start. It didn’t take long for David to adjust to the track and he quickly caught the lead 6-car pack. Although he tried to make a move for 6th place on a couple occasions, the car wouldn’t pull off the corner. David settled for 7th in the heat race and quickly called for a gear change prior to the feature.

David once again opted to start last in the race, but the gear change worked well and he quickly began passing cars.

By mid-race the #37 Chevrolet had climbed to 7th when the #7 of Dan Delisle and #10 of Jesse Kennedy began bumping each other down the back straight. Delisle slowed suddenly entering turn 3 and David couldn’t avoid running into the back of the #7. David spun and several other cars were collected in the wreck.

Suffering only minor body damage, David restarted the race in 11th place. He had one more close call later when he slipped in front of the #43 of Jay Doerr on the backstretch. Doerr tried to outbreak David entering turn 3 to take the 9th position away, but spun his car to avoid collecting the #37. David maintained his spot for the rest of the race and finished in 9th.

The team begin next weekend by displaying the car from 10:30a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Skyway Jacks Restaurant in Streetsville before returning to Flamboro Speedway Saturday evening.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 6:30 p.m. See you there!

Elliott Claims Top-5 in Mid-Week 100-Lapper

The David Elliott Racing Team ventured out to Flamboro this past Wednesday for the track’s special mid-summer 100-lap race.

A top-notch field made up of the top Flamboro drivers, several Delaware regulars and Larry Jackson from Kawartha Speedway meant that passing in the feature could be difficult and qualifying up front would be vital. With a second and a third in his two qualifying heats, David started fifth for the night’s feature race.

The plan for the night was patience. David knew that he couldn’t win the race in the first half of the race, so he settled into fifth early and took it easy. Following an early caution the #37 Chevrolet had the opportunity to test the high lane on a restart. The car liked the high-side and David moved past the #56 of Jeff Stewart into 4th place.

A series of cautions continued to keep the field bunched tightly together throughout the middle laps of the event and David maintained his 4th position.

The field finally ran some longer green flag segments at the end of the race and the fans saw a familiar sight…the #82 of Jason Shaw on the rear bumper of the #37 machine. David’s car developed a slight push, but Shaw still wasn’t able to get his nose to the inside.

With just a handful of laps to go Shaw repeatedly used his bumper on the #37 and finally got David out of shape enough to make the move into 4th. David tucked back in behind the #82 and settled for a 5th place finish.

“Our plan was to save the car for the first three-quarters of the race then go hard at the end,” said the obviously worn-out driver of the #37. “But, the truth is, we had to run hard that entire race.”

The team will be heading west on the 401 this Friday for their first visit of the year to Delaware Speedway. A track that he has historically run well at, David is hoping to give the Delaware boys a run for their money.

The Grisdale Late Models have a night off from Flamboro this weekend, but will return to the 1/3 mile oval on July 28th.
