Elliott Can’t Shake Monkey Off His Back as Bad Luck Continues

August 7th brought hope for a change in luck for the David Elliott Racing Team. After weeks of handling problems, the team had replaces the entire front suspension and braking system. They headed back to Delaware for twin 25-lap features with the goal of climbing back into the top 10.

As soon as David took the #37 Pennzoil Impala to the track for practice, he radioed in that the handling issues hadn’t been fixed. The car was quicker than it had been most of the year, but it was completely out of control. The team adjusted on the car throughout the practice sessions, but when it came time for qualifying, David could only muster a 16th place time.

When the field rumbled off for the first 25-lap feature, all of the drivers showed great patience. For the first time all year, the race ran without a caution. The only problem was that the #37 team didn’t have the opportunity to pit and make any further adjustments. David was able to pass only two cars and finished the race in 14th place.

The team did get the chance to make changes to the car between features and, with 22 cars being inverted, David would start in the 8th position.

As the cars came to the green the #72 of Shawn Thompson, who was lined up directly in front of David, drifted very high and climbed the wall before shooting back down the track and right into the side of the Pennzoil Impala. This contact turned David into another car, which climbed up and over the driver side of the #37. Several other cars pile into the wreck before it ended.

David climbed from his car when the red flag flew to assess the damage. He quickly decided that it was mostly cosmetic – although the entire left side of the car was caved in. He was able to drive it back to the pits and, amazingly, the crew patched the car up and got it back on the track without losing a lap.

David climbed back to 14th place by the time the white flag flew. A spin by the #5 of Kyle Delisle led to a one-lap dash. During that final lap of racing, the #27 of Mat Box was turned on the back stretch. David found a hole through the middle and avoided the wreck which also ended up collecting the #32 of Matt Roblee and the #9 of Gary Elliott.

The team has a lot of work to do this week in reparation for the final race of the JMB Auto leasing Triple Crown Series this coming Friday. David sits in 6th place, just 4 points out of 4th.

Hope to see you at the track this Friday!

Saturday August 15th We will be on display at Rose-Hill Liquidation in Waterdown.

Hope to see you there
