Another Week, Another Top-10
Between having to work late on Saturday
and a shortened practice session, David
was unable to turn any hot laps prior to
the heat races.
The #37 Monte Carlo
lined up at the back of the field in the
7th position for the first
heat…a position that would allow him to
take a few laps to break in the new
tires on the car. However, immediately
after the green flag flew, it became
evident that the car had a major
problem.
“I’ve got no fuel going to the motor,”
David yelled as the car sputtered around
the track.
He pulled the car in and the team
immediately began searching for the
cause of the problem. While crew chief
Ed Askin began examining the carburetor,
David began pulling apart the fuel cell.
David quickly found a kink in the fuel
pickup line inside the fuel cell. A
quick repair was made and David was able
to make his second heat.
David started on the outside pole and it
became evident that the repair had
worked. The #37 roared down the front
straightaway at the green and after a
bit of contact with the polesitter Jay
Doerr in turn 1, David took the lead
coming off turn 2. The motor was working
fine, but the handling wasn’t
cooperating. David fought a bad push all
race, but held off Doerr for the heat
win.
Before the feature, the team made
several major changes to loosen up the
car.
Again, the changes the team made worked
well and David was able to quickly move
from his 8th starting
position to 6th. The #86 of
Kenny Forth checked out on the rest of
the field who were mired behind the #99
of Dave Bentley.
The only hint of
trouble David experienced occurred when
the front cars checked up a bit and the
#52 of Scott Lyons got into the back of
the #37, sending David sideways. Lyons
eased up, allowing David to straighten
out the car and the two drivers held
their positions. The rest of the race
was single-file follow the leader with
David finishing 6th,
sandwiched between the #82 of Jason Shaw
and Lyons’ #52.
“Considering we had no warm-ups and the
fuel pick up problem, I guess we should
be happy,” David said.
The team will be back at Flamboro
Speedway this Saturday for the final
race of the Grisdale Triple Crown Series
where David sits just one point ahead of
his father Gary.
Front gates open at 5
p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m.
See you there.
