Respectable Top-10 Finish for Elliott after a Frustrating Day at Sauble “Garbage.” “Junk.” “The worst car I’ve ever driven.” – These were the various ways David described his #37 Chevrolet on Sunday at Sauble Speedway. Coming off a second place finish last weekend at Flamboro, the David Elliott Racing Team were optimistic that two minor repairs would help the Pennzoil Chevrolet run even better at the beach. However, the team struggled to make the car handle better for David. “During early practice sessions, we were pretty fast,” said David, “but I was just about spinning out every lap.” By the time the practice sessions ended, the car had slowed about two-tenths of a second on the stopwatch, but at least it was a little more drive able. When David returned to the pits after the autograph session, he said the transmission was making strange noises. Rather than take a chance, the team quickly put in the spare transmission before the first heat. The car ran better in the heat, especially in the high lane, but a problem with the drive shaft caused a bad vibration and David slowly slipped to the back and finished 6th. The day wasn’t getting any better. The team fixed the drive shaft and rolled out for the second heat. David tried running the bottom lane, but the car was just too loose and wanted to spin out off every corner. A dejected David came back to the pits willing to try anything to make the car better. The team made radical weight adjustments, changed a shock, changed the gear and swapped a couple tires…knowing that they couldn’t make the car any worse. David lined up in 18th position for the start of the 100-lap feature race. Shortly after the green flag flew, David came over the radio saying the car was the best it had been all day…in fact, it was the best driving late model he had ever had at Sauble. The #37 quickly began passing cars on the high side and moved up to 12th before a brush with the backstretch wall sent David spinning into turn 3. Fortunately, the car wasn’t damaged and he rejoined the back of the field. David continued to pass cars on the outside, but progress was slowed by the numerous cautions for wrecks and spins. One of these incidents involved David beingspun in a chain reaction incident. Once again, the #37 went to the back of the pack. When the cars finally ran a few laps without a caution, David moved up steadily to 7th place behind the #95 of Kevin Benish. With less than 10 laps to go the #82 of Jason Shaw, #95 of Benish and David’s #37 were running nose-to-tail. When all three cars checked up, David couldn’t stop in time, got into the back of the #95 and spun him. Although it was accidental contact, the track’s zero tolerance policy meant David was black-flagged and sent to the rear of the lead lap cars. David restarted in 13th place with only eight laps to go, but he was able to pass four cars before the race ended and claimed a top-10 finish.“If you told me earlier this afternoon that we would be a top-10 car at the end of the race, I would have said you were crazy,” said David. “The crew did a ton of work, we tried some major changes and we hit on a good combination at the right time.” The David Elliott Racing Team will return to Flamboro Speedway this Saturday for the final race in the Grisdale Triple Crown Series. David sits in 4th in the series standings and is looking to gain a couple more spots in this final race. The race team will also be at Rose-Hill Liquidation Saturday from 11:00 till 3:00 before the races. David will not be there due to his work schedule, but make sure to stop by and see the car. The green flag is at 6:30…see you at the track.
