Moves up 18 Positions to Finish 4th
in Final Grisdale Race
Race teams
and fans made the trek to Flamboro
Speedway for a rare Sunday night event
on August 24th. It was the
rain date for the final Grisdale Triple
Crown race of the year and David had to
battle traffic all the way from Orillia
if he was going to make it to the track
in time for his heat race.
David’s father Gary took the #37
Pennzoil Chevrolet out for the first set
of hot laps and David came running into
the pits, just in time for the final
set. He said the car was good, except
for a slight bog in the motor when he
stepped on the throttle.
The crew
made a slight adjustment to the
carburetor and David lined up for his
heat race. While waiting to go onto the
track, David called over the radio that
the car kept stalling. The crew
frantically tried to diagnose the
problem, but could not get the car
running in time for the heat and had to
push the car back to the pits.
David and
the team checked the entire fuel system
and found a problem with the pickup hose
inside the fuel cell. The repairs were
made, but David would have to start 22nd
in the evening’s feature race. Even as
driver introductions were taking place,
David was still making adjustments under
the hood.
The caution flew early and often in the
50-lap feature. David patiently moved
his way through the field and soon found
himself in the top 10. Throughout the
latter half of the race, the #37 and #52
of Scott Lyons swapped 5th
and 6th spots at nearly every
caution.
Coming off
turn two on the final lap, the leaders
got together and David shot to the
outside and into 3rd place.
He knew his father’s #36 was close
behind on the inside and didn’t want a
repeat of the wreck which happened
during the first Grisdale race, so David
kept the Pennzoil Chevrolet in the
middle lane going into turn three. This
allowed Gary to dive to the bottom and
nose past David at the finish line.
The entire
David Elliott Racing Team was happy with
the 4th place finish,
considering all of the problems they had
earlier in the evening.
The team will spend the week preparing
the car for next Sunday’s
APC 300 at Delaware Speedway.
This is always a great event and with
$10,000 going to the winner, there will
be no shortage of excitement.
